Deborah Sweeney Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule Second Edition- (ADOS-2)

Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule Second Edition- (ADOS-2)

Two-day introductory workshop Thursday 26th & Friday 27th April 2018

(Advanced Course Thursday 29th November – Saturday 1st December 2018 separate registration required)

Places limited to 20 participants

What is the ADOS-2?

The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule Second Edition (ADOS-2) is a semi-structured, standardised assessment of communication, social interaction, and play.  It provides a series of standardised contexts in which the individual’s social, communication and repetitive, stereotyped behaviours can be observed.  It has been designed to assist in the diagnosis of autism and pervasive developmental disorders and is suggested as a complementary instrument to the Autism Diagnostic Interview Revised (ADI-R).  Standardised toys and activities are used to present opportunities for social and communicative interaction with the examiner.  During these activities, observation of the individual notes the absence of presence of behaviours of interest. A diagnostic algorithm consistent with DSM-V and ICD-10 clinical diagnoses is generated.

Prerequisite Training

For all our ADOS2 courses at Mindful there is prerequisite training required – the ASD Assessment Fundamentals, 2 day workshop.

At Mindful our training is supported by Department of Health and Human Services and our mandate is to provide high quality ASD training that is accessible and affordable for clinicians, particularly those working in CAMHS/CYMHS.  As our ASD training calendar is designed for mental health clinicians working with complex clients, we have made the ASD Assessment Fundamentals a pre requisite to the ADOS 2 training as it covers all the components of a comprehensive ASD assessment. This includes a comprehensive developmental history, consideration of collateral information and issues of comorbidity, differential diagnosis and formulation. The ADOS 2 is one component of an ASD assessment and we would like to ensure that all clinicians attending have a broad understanding of the complexities of ASD assessment. This workshop is presented by a tertiary ASD assessment team from either Monash or RCH and the cases presented include some degree of complexity.

Who is the training for?

Mental Health Clinicians, Child & Adolescent Psychiatrists, Paediatricians, Speech Pathologists, Psychologists, Occupational Therapists

Who provides the training? Deborah Sweeney

Deborah has been using the ADI-R and ADOS in complex, multi-disciplinary assessments for over 14 years and regularly trains health professionals in the ADI-R and ADOS throughout the Asia Pacific region.

What does the training include?

The two-day workshop provides an introduction to the ADOS-2 as an assessment tool, and is a first step in the process for establishing reliability.  It uses a mixture of large group lecture, demonstration, and scoring, as well as DVD demonstration of the ADOS-2. Training does not include the toddler module.

Prior to attending the workshop, you will be sent a pre-course information pack.  This will contain information about the venue, options for purchasing ADOS-2 materials, and some reading materials.  It will also include a DVD of two ADOS-2 administrations for you to watch prior to attending the course.  You will also be asked to do two practice administrations of the ADOS-2.  This can be done with any child, or as a role play exercise.  This task is to help familiarise yourself with the administration of the ADOS-2.  It is very useful preparation for the workshop.  Detailed information on this will be provided in the pre-course pack.  It is also required that you read the ADOS-2 manual prior to attending the workshop. Therefore to participate in this workshop, you will need to have access to an ADOS-2 kit. ADOS-2 distributors include:

18 May 2018 Deeta Kimber Understanding and developing emotional regulation in children with ASD utilizing as Innovative Visual Approach: Tracking Better

 Mechanics of Feelings in ASD

Understanding and developing emotional regulation in children with ASD utilizing an Innovative Visual Approach: Tracking Better

Half Day Seminar Thursday 17th May 2018

Who provides the training?

Dr Deeta Kimber is a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist who has been working in regional and remote Western Australia for the past 4 years. She also worked in juvenile justice and has a special interest in the impact and treatment of developmental trauma. She is currently working for Kimberley Mental Health and Drug Services (KMHDS) for CAMHS in East and West Kimberley.

What does the training include?

This workshop will look at the physiology, survival role and classification of feelings to a level of detail that clinicians understand how to adapt this work for children with ASD (primary and secondary school age). It will be a half day workshop with slides, hands on instructions and printed material to work with using real life clinical examples.

Dr Deeta Kimber has constructed a visual developmental mental health program that teaches individuals to track themselves in the 5 key domains of self-regulation Tracking Better™.  Deeta will demonstrate how to use this visual developmental mental health system and tools, Tracking Better™ to assist with emotional regulation in children and young people with ASD.

Participants should leave:

  • Understanding the importance of using visual aides when exploring and discussing feelings.
  • Understand the dysregulating effects of strong feelings and the need to teach tools to reset body regulation (breathing and sensory grounding).
  • Understand the impact of ASD on a discussion of feelings when exploring them.
  • Start to see feelings from a perspective of core/survival and social feelings and look at intermediate states such as body language/feelings.
  • Start to probe for triggered vulnerable feelings “sneaky feelings” and protective “big feeling” and the importance of addressing both.
  • Use social stories as a means of exploring more helpful responses to strong feelings.
  • Learn to titrate feeling regulation work to level of stress arousal in a client at any given time.
